If you’re a reporter, blogger, author, editor, producer, or publisher writing about suicide or mental health, the Lake County Suicide Prevention Coalition would like to help connect you with the accurate information you need to report on these sensitive topics without inadvertently influencing vulnerable individuals to take their own lives – a phenomenon known as “suicide contagion”. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) offers practical advice on how to report on suicide safely, accurately and with sensitivity.
Their publication, “Recommendations for reporting on Suicide”–which is research based and developed with the help of journalists and dozens of suicide prevention organizations–is available on that site as well.
Our Lake County Suicide Prevention Coalition can arrange interviews with area experts who can offer information on local current suicide-related issues, and local statistics. Call 440.350.2000 or send us an email.
